Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst play unlikely lovers in their new movie.Â
On Wednesday, June 25, Paramount Pictures released the trailer for Roofman, which stars the Magic Mike alum, 45, and the Bring It On actress, 43, in a twisty story about a struggling father turned convict who falls in love with a divorced mom.Â
Directed by Derek Cianfrance, the crime drama follows former Army Ranger Jeffrey Manchester (Tatum) who ends up in prison after robbing a string of McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs.Â
Nicknamed the Roofman, he escapes the jailhouse and secretly lives in a Toys “R” Us for several months while planning his next move. Things go awry when Jeffrey falls in love with employee and divorced mother Leigh (Dunst) amid the manhunt.

The trailer opens with Jeffrey’s nightly stay in the toy store. The man is seen roller skating down aisles, snacking on peanut M&Ms and sleeping on a kids mattress in a back room.Â
He then turns on a news broadcast, which states there’s been no leads on the Roofman’s whereabouts six months after his escape from prison.Â
“I was never very good at life,” the convict explains in a voiceover, as cuts of him robbing a McDonald’s play out on the screen. “Kind of like I was not good at hurting people.”

Snapshots of Jeffrey in prison, hiding out in the woods and planning his next moves are seen before Leigh comes into the picture. Jeffrey watches her via security camera invite her boss to a toy drive, which he rudely declines. The convict then attends the drive himself and donates a bag of toys that he stole from the store.Â
Jeffrey and Leigh continue to hang out, and when the time comes for him to go on the run with a new passport, he expresses interest in staying for his new relationship.
The movie also stars Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, Jimmy O. Yang and Peter Dinklage.Â

Cianfrance co-wrote the script with Kirt Gunn, as well as executive produced. Tatum also served as an executive producer.
Cianfrance last directed 2020’s Sound of Metal and the TV series I Know This Much is True, the first of which earned him an Academy Award nomination. He is also known for Blue Valentine.Â
