Matty Matheson and his wife, Trish Spencer, have been married since 2014 and together since 2000.

Their relationship started in the small town of Fort Erie, Ontario. High school sweethearts, the two began dating in their teens, even attending prom together, according to Matheson’s 2023 anniversary Instagram post.

Now, over two decades later, Matheson and Spencer are raising a family together, with their three children named Macarthur, Rizzo and Ozzy, per Rolling Stone. Their relationship has spanned Matheson’s rise to fame in the culinary world and beyond, from his early days as a chef to his current role as an Emmy-winning executive producer and actor on FX’s hit series The Bear, starring Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White.

But it hasn’t always been easy for the couple. Matheson celebrated 10 years of sobriety on his Instagram in 2023, crediting Spencer with supporting him through his recovery. “She’s a smart, smart caring lady, but she doesn’t F around. She’s a lifer,” Matheson said on the Mythical Kitchen series Last Meal in 2024.

Spencer and Matheson met in high school, in their shared hometown of Fort Erie, in rural Ontario. The two opened up to Toronto Life in 2016 about the early days of their relationship, admitting that Matheson had a bit of a reputation as the class clown and troublemaker in their small town.

“Matt was friends with everyone,” Spencer said, but she was reluctant to pursue Matheson until her sister told her to go out with “the funniest guy in the world.”

According to Toronto Life, Matheson celebrated their first anniversary by gifting Spencer a guitar. On their second, she learned how to play “Fade Into You,” by Mazzy Star, and serenaded him.

“We went to prom together,” Matheson said. He also spoke about who Spencer was in high school. “She was cute, she was hot. She was like the one hot goth girl,” he said. “She’s the youngest of four goths … we used to call them the Craft. It was small town s—.”

Matheson later clarified in an Instagram post in 2023 that it was Spencer who asked him to the prom. “You asked me to prom. I said cool, let’s go!” he wrote in the caption.

“My favorite chef is Trish, mother of my children,” he said. Matheson even shared one of his wife’s dishes, a “white lightning chicken chili,” in the same video.

However, he made sure to safeguard Spencer’s real recipes. “If Trisha ever caught me actually sharing her recipes, that are actually from a Rachel Ray Magazine from like, 2005, she’d break my arm,” Matheson said.

The actor also told the Vancouver Sun that his children go back and forth on who the best chef is, between their two parents, depending on the child and the day. “It’s one of those things where, it’s just a win for everybody if they just eat what you make,” Matheson said.

Spencer is the co-founder of a bridal salon, LoversLand, in Toronto, per Azure. The business is co-owned by Brian Richer, who also owns the restaurant Parts and Labor, where Matheson established his early career, according to Toronto Life.

Azure described the shop as having an “edgier” approach to bridal, with “flower crowns and lover’s oil” on the shelves. Spencer spoke about this departure from traditional bridal styling, saying, “We were tired of super-feminine bridal places full of poofy ball gowns. Most of the time, men are afraid to even walk in. We thought it was time to change that.”

According to the shop’s website, it’s important for them to provide a “mellow” experience, with Spencer echoing that in her interview with Azure, saying, “We don’t stress brides out.”

For her own wedding to Matheson, in 2014, Spencer wore a simple draped silk dress with a crown of yellow and orange roses, which Matheson shared on Instagram.

Four years later, in 2022, Matheson opened Rizzo’s House of Parm, a homestyle Italian restaurant named after his daughter, according to Taste Toronto. Matheson may play the lovable restaurant mechanic, Neil Fak, on The Bear, but it’s Spencer who fixes things around the house. Matheson appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2024 and talked about Spencer’s handiness at home.

“Trish is really good, she fixes the lights, puts salt down on the driveway when it’s snowing, she’s out there fixing stuff in the barn,” he said. Matheson continued to emphasize the difference between his real-life skills and those of his character, deferring to Spencer.

“I’m like ‘Trisha, what am I supposed to do? The oven’s broken,’ “ Matheson said.“She’s like, ‘You fix it, you idiot.’ ”

“10 years ago today I put down drugs and alcohol. I am filled with love and acceptance of myself and am able to love truly!” he wrote. Matheson had a difficult wake-up call when he suffered a heart attack in his sleep at age 29. Spencer stayed beside him and, according to Toronto Life, drove him to the hospital after he woke up with excruciating chest pains in the early morning.

Mattheson opened up about the emotional realization he had following his heart attack on Last Meal. “Did I die, did I not die? Why am I still alive? I should probably stop doing the things that I’m doing,” he said about the moment.

However, the health scare wasn’t what motivated Matheson to reach for sobriety. He expressed a desire to “go harder,” until his boss at the restaurant Parts and Labor staged an intervention with some of Matheson’s other friends from Toronto’s food and party scene, according to Toronto Life. He’s been sober since.

Matheson also spoke on Last Meals about Spencer’s support of his recovery. “Trish is my everything. She was there the whole time. She didn’t give up on me, and … I’ll spend the rest of my life taking care of her and making sure she’s cool,” he said.

Matheson expressed his fear at her walking away, saying, “Losing her was scarier than dying.”
